Have you ever said this to yourself?
Who do I think I am to want that?
I've tried and failed so many times, why start again?
It is impossible for me to lose weight?
I will be judged or made fun of…
I don't have time to workout/eat healthy/take a break…
Have you ever seen yourself ...
act out for no reason?
in an event you didn't want to be in?
stressing over something simple?
get defensive for overcommitting?
crave deep rest but endlessly scroll or abuse your time?
Usually, we let stories and patterns like these, cause us to neglect our core needs and values which in turn make us sacrifice what we truly want.
If you listen to these stories or witness these qualities, you might set your alarm for 6AM to go for a run, only to hit snooze 20 times. Or meal prep on Sunday only to order takeout every night instead. You're motivated for change so ONE step in the right direction feels right to you.
You might go to a coffee shop to apply for jobs or write the outline for your book idea only to spend the next 2 hours scrolling (and stalking people) on Social Media.
The reality is…you know WHAT to do, but for some reason, you are choosing not to do it and that is keeping you stuck. (Hint: It's your self limiting stories that are fueling your doubts & fears and causing you to self sabotage!)
It may be time to write a new story.
When you are on your A game - everything is in alignment. You aren't fighting with yourself, your wants, needs or purpose. When your whole body is in alignment and you are eating foods intended to nourish, engaging in habits that are restorative and ritualistic and are doing it because you actually feel great, you will experience:
✔ A powerful immune system
✔ Heart Forward and Honest, Aligned relationships
✔ A genuine DHARMA for life (your life's purpose)
✔ An open and expansive perspective
✔ Dreams that are within reach (and the motivation to get the ones that aren't)
✔ Graceful aging in health, movement, skin, digestion and memory
✔ Reinforcement that you are an inspiration and a help to others
✔ That your speech reflects your depth, your care, and connectivity
So, who are you now and who do you want to be?
Take a piece of paper, split it in half and title it "Who Am I" on one side and "Who Am I Becoming" on the other side.
Ask yourself questions like "If I continue this bad habit _______________ I will be here in 6 weeks..." and those answers can go in the Who Am I column.
Look at what you've discovered and adjust the statements to be a work in progress. Change the story in YOUR OWN EYES.
If you are struggling with this activity, think of someone you know, in your circle or even someone you don't know and think about their qualities that you love. Use those to make statements like "I want to be the kind of person who goes to bed early" or "I am becoming a gym goer"
As you start to create The New Story in Your Eyes, write them in the future tense. If you are great at reflection or self studies, you can incorporate SMART Goals into these statements too. For instance, I'll make you an example - this is not an actual reflection of me personally!
Who Am I? I am a night owl who presses snooze 20 times. I hate mornings. I never workout. I have high blood pressure.
Who am I becoming? I am becoming a morning person. I am learning to like mornings because I can get a walk in. I am regulating my blood pressure.
S - Specific - I am going to leave my alarm clock in the bathroom so I don't hit snooze and my clothing will be right there for me to go on a walk.
M - Measurable - I can measure this by checking my blood pressure and tracking how many days I walk in one month.
A - Attainable - Avoiding the snooze button 5/7 times a week (work week) and walking 3-4 times a week is a good start.
R - Relevant - This is relevant because I don't want to take medicine daily! But the bigger picture is if I don't do anything, I could have a stroke and that's worse than walking.
T - I will give myself 1 month to learn this - I have a 6 week doctors appointment shortly after that so if I can regulate on my own, I can avoid medication.
The idea here is that you can make it as simple and easy as possible. You are also writing it down so there is a tangible object that you can see! Committing plans to writing doesn't something for your brain and it's intention to follow through.
Best of luck and let me know how it goes! This activity is an adaptation from workbook pages within The Yoga Health Club.
