It's not selfish to prioritize your health and wellness.
As a matter of fact, I wish more people put themselves first when entering the subject of health and wellness. Have you ever tried to cook dinner for someone when you are sick and can't even stand the smell of a grilled steak? Or have you gone to work sick with 30 children asking you the same 120 questions about what time it is, is it lunch yet, when is this due and does it have to be typed?
I am just as strong as you are and I certainly don't want there to be any notion that I am weak so I am usually the first one to bust through the sniffles, sore throat and balloon head feelings. I constantly put other people first and would be termed a people pleaser by definition. There is a fine line between giving people what they need and prioritizing yourself to give you what you need too.
Maybe it feels selfish to go to bed early because that leaves your partner alone, on bed time duty or you skip your favorite show the group talks about the next day. By skipping out on this inherent need for sleep, you burn the candle at both ends. You wake up exhausted, you are inefficient with time at the office that day, you go to bed exhausted with your mind racing through how much you didn't finish and how busy tomorrow will be while stalling on your pillow for another two hours.
Many of us were raised to be polite and manners have NO idea what allergies or dietary restrictions are. Personally, I was taught that it is polite to try everything once, graciously accept food when it's given to you and be a part of The Clean Plate Club. As a child, I observed that when I refused food, this was bad behavior that I was reprimanded for and that the person offering it got their feelings hurt. Even as a grown woman using manner and replying with a "No, thank you," can send the chef off with their head down wondering why their caprese skewers aren't a hit with the local yogi. It's okay to refuse food. It's okay to say "No thank you, I'm not hungry right now." Absolutely, you can meet friends out for dinner and skip dinner because they don't eat until 10 PM and you ate already at 5:30 (a very reasonable hour for dinner!!) Also, you can be honest and say that you don't feel good or that you can't have it because of the ingredients however, you shouldn't need to justify your wants and needs. You don't have to have dessert, an extra cocktail, seconds at a family meal or anything else that comes with pressure. This is prioritizing your health! Avoiding gut bloat, your allergies and choosing to feel good over regret is what we should do more.
It's not weird or abnormal to schedule in physical activity and prioritize physical body movement throughout your life. In the old days, hunters and gatherers had to hunt on foot first thing in the morning - what does that look like? It looks like a workout to me! 5:00 AM emerging from your hut, spear in hand, sprinting towards the nearest stream to find a 200+ pound animal quenching their thirst. Precision aim sends the spear into the deer and now, we need to figure out what the most efficient way is to bring this carcass back to camp to fire it up and eat breakfast. Now begin the trek to camp carrying a 200+ pound beast over our shoulders... this is a workout! Scheduling in an AM workout or maintaining your Intermittent Fasting hours is NORMAL. What's not normal is pouring a lab created cereal into a bowl with nutmilk. It's not our norm to snack or gnosh all day out of boredom. It's unnatural to stay up all night, sit all day and minimize movements.
Get out there - move your body - eat well - and learn to say NO to the things that make you sick and tired, even if that means someone will be offended.
Rant over :)
